What is the difference between a single-pole and three-way switch?

A single-pole switch controls a light or fixture from one location. A three-way switch works in pairs to control a single light from two locations, such as at both ends of a hallway. Single-pole switches have two screw terminals plus a ground. Three-way switches have three terminals plus a ground and do not have ON/OFF markings. Replacing a three-way switch with a single-pole will break the multi-location control.
