Why does my water heater smell like sulfur?

A sulfur or rotten egg smell in hot water is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas produced by bacteria in the water heater tank. This commonly happens when the water heater's anode rod interacts with certain bacteria. Replacing the standard aluminum or magnesium anode rod with a powered or zinc anode rod usually solves the problem. Flushing the water heater thoroughly and then raising the temperature to 140 degrees for a few hours can also kill the bacteria.

Why It Matters

Sulfur-smelling water is unpleasant for bathing, washing dishes, and laundry. The fix is usually simple and does not require replacing the entire water heater.
